Tensile Canopy – The Grand Acropolis Mall, Himmatnagar
Schafbock Design Workshop successfully delivered the turnkey design, engineering, fabrication, and installation of a high-performance tensile canopy at The Grand Acropolis Mall in Himmatnagar. Executed in proud collaboration with Aereole Construction and StrucArt Design, this expansive 11,000 sqft arrival forecourt redefines commercial architecture standards in North Gujarat. The project establishes a striking, instantly recognizable visual identity visible directly from the highway while providing vital weather protection during Gujarat’s intense summer heat and monsoon seasons.
Advanced Engineering & Wind Design
Good tensile structures are shaped by forces, but great ones are resolved through site execution. The design pushed multiple structural boundaries by implementing four massive, completely independent inverted cone modules, each spanning a clear $16\text{ m} \times 12\text{ m}$ footprint.
Because these modules are structurally independent and do not tie into adjacent buildings, each unit had to achieve self-contained stability. Our engineering team successfully balanced massive force concentrations at the endplates with visual subtlety, keeping the overall steel profile elegant and proportionate to the mall’s scale. Furthermore, the entire system was structurally optimized to withstand intense regional wind loads and severe tunneling effects created by surrounding built edges.
Smart Detailing & Site Realities
Advanced water management was integrated natively into the architecture. Rainwater drains directly through the center of each main column via internal PVC piping, eliminating external gutter clutter and protecting the steel system from long-term corrosion.
Delivering this caliber of advanced fabric engineering in a Tier-3 city came with major logistical hurdles. Installing heavy membranes at significant heights with limited regional crane capacity tested our rigging team’s precision. The site team even resolved an unexpected ecological challenge when a live honeybee colony nested on a membrane segment, which required safely trapping and relocating the queen bee to clear the workspace.
