Science City Tensile Canopy Retrofit & Membrane Replacement

Executed between 2005 and 2006, this tensile canopy Science City project in Ahmedabad stands as a landmark milestone in our engineering journey. At a time when architectural fabric structures were relatively new to Gujarat’s public spaces, Schafbock Design Workshop was entrusted with the complete design, engineering, fabrication, and installation of a precision replacement membrane.

More than two decades later, this installation remains fully functional. It serves as tangible proof of how durable material selection, rigorous patterning, and sound engineering guarantee multi-decade structural performance.

Engineering Challenges of the Tensile Canopy Science City Retrofit

Replacing an existing canopy comes with distinct technical hurdles, especially when integrating with an existing structural framework:

  • No As-Built Documentation: No structural CAD data or reliable baseline drawings existed for the initial frame.
  • Fixed Anchor Boundaries: The existing structural steel endplates had to be reused without modification. Consequently, this left zero margin for dimensional discrepancy.
  • Fast-Track Delivery: From total dismantling and reverse engineering to cutting patterns and final tensioning, our team completed the entire scope in less than 30 days.

Survey, 3D Form-Finding & Patterning for the Science City Canopy

Because automated digital simulation workflows were limited in 2005, we executed an intensive on-site reverse engineering protocol:

  1. Total Station Coordinate Survey: We captured every critical mast node, clevis point, and boundary pin on-site to generate a dependable 3D point-cloud baseline.
  2. 3D Mesh Modeling: We reconstructed the complex geometric boundaries in Rhinoceros 3D and CAD to analyze radial deflection and pretension stresses.
  3. Compensated Cutting Patterns: We drafted precision flattened biaxial patterns with manual stretch compensation to account for fabric elongation under active design tension.
  4. Calibrated Installation: The team rigged the fabric and tensioned the boundary cables smoothly, achieving balanced stress distribution across all legacy anchor plates on the first attempt.

Tensile Membrane & Material Upgrades for Science City

The previous canopy had degraded due to weathering and hardware oxidation. Therefore, our team engineered a durable material stack specifically adapted to Ahmedabad’s harsh semi-arid climate:

  • Architectural Fabric: We specified a 700 GSM PVDF-coated membrane from Serge Ferrari. This material ensures high UV stability, self-cleaning surface behavior, and excellent tear strength.
  • Stainless Steel Tension Rigging: We upgraded all perimeter lines to marine-grade stainless steel cables to eliminate the corrosion problems seen in earlier carbon-steel setups.
  • Protected Connection Detailing: We treated and re-detailed all structural interface nodes to prevent premature fabric chafing under high wind loads.

A 20-Year Legacy Milestone

Today, the tensile canopy Science City installation stands as a foundational proof point for our workshop. It proved that demanding architectural retrofits succeed when precision surveying, rigorous patterning, and durable material science converge seamlessly on site.
