KANCHAN BUNGLOW TENSILE STRUCTURE
The tensile structure at Kanchan Bungalow is an architectural shade installation in Bhuj, Kutch. Schafbock Design + Workshop (SBDW) engineered this entrance canopy to deliver lasting strength against harsh coastal weather. In addition, the design blends clean aesthetics with a balanced hyperbolic-paraboloid form.
Engineering the Tensile Structure at Kanchan Bungalow
Standard awnings usually rely on heavy support frames. However, the entrance shade at Kanchan Bungalow uses a flexible cable-net grid. Our team analyzed these complex equilibrium states with ixCube Software. As a result, the canopy stays taut under both high downward pressure and heavy wind suction.
Furthermore, our team collaborated closely with structural engineer Mr. Vipul Mehta. Together, we tuned every connection for local wind conditions. Consequently, the tensile structure at Kanchan Bungalow delivers high structural stability without adding visual bulk.
Critical Details: Clamping & Circular Rain Shields
Once our crew pulled the membrane over the cable net, each intersection required careful detailing:
- Precision Clamping: We clamped the fabric firmly at each cable junction. Therefore, it rests securely under load and resists uplift during storms.
- Circular Weather Shields: Rainwater often seeps through hardware penetrations. To solve this, we installed custom circular shields over every joint. Consequently, every punch hole required absolute alignment across the layout.
- Architectural Fabric: We selected high-tenacity architectural membrane. This fabric provides reliable UV protection, high tear strength, and a clean finish on both sides.
Integrated Perimeter Gutters and Drainage
Managing rainwater runoff is vital for fabric architecture. Therefore, we installed custom gutters along the perimeter to stop uncontrolled dripping. These channels direct the runoff straight toward the side columns. Next, the water flows invisibly through the hollow columns into ground drains. Thus, the roof preserves its sleek silhouette throughout the year.
Precision Installation and Client Handover
SBDW founder Shehzad Irani supervised the final installation and inspection steps. Our team checked fabric tension, cleaned the membrane, and verified anchor safety. Because we follow rigorous quality control, the canopy remains in peak condition years after installation.
Indeed, this canopy proves how thoughtful engineering transforms outdoor spaces. You can explore our other tensile architecture projects or read about our tensile design and engineering services. For global industry standards, consult the specifications from the Fabric Structures Association.
