Inverted Umbrella Tensile Structures – CEPT University, Ahmedabad
At CEPT University – Ahmedabad’s renowned center for architecture and design – SCHAFBOCK DESIGN + WORKSHOP was invited to design and install a series of inverted umbrella tensile structures. These shade systems now serve as outdoor gathering zones, encouraging interaction and comfort while enhancing the campus’s architectural identity.
Each tensile umbrella uses high-strength fabric stretched across a reverse-cone steel frame. The inverted geometry ensures efficient water runoff, stability under wind loads, and dramatic visual presence. This choice of form serves both climatic function and symbolic form, reflecting CEPT’s ethos of experimental, expressive, and context-aware design.
SBDW’s involvement included full design coordination, fabrication, and on-site execution — delivering a project that meets the needs of students and visitors while aligning with CEPT’s legacy of open space design.
Designed with both function and form in mind, these tensile umbrellas at CEPT serve as shaded public nodes. Their inverted conical geometry allows natural drainage while maintaining visual lightness. As a leading firm in tensile architecture, SCHAFBOCK DESIGN + WORKSHOP translated CEPT’s vision into a built reality that encourages comfort, interaction, and architectural identity.
